Why AI Cannot Build Ontology — And Why That’s Not AI’s Failure
A sharp observation has emerged in contemporary discourse on artificial intelligence and knowledge representation. The critique runs as follows: there exists a fundamental contradiction between the probabilistic nature of artificial intelligence and the definitional requirements of ontology. AI operates through statistical inference, producing statements such as “there is a ninety percent probability that B follows A.” Ontology, by contrast, demands absolute declarations: “A is a subclass of B” admits no qualification, no uncertainty, no approximation. The metaphor is striking: attempting to build ontology with artificial intelligence is akin to constructing a concrete building’s blueprint using sand castles.
This critique unfolds across three distinct layers, each exposing a different dimension of the alleged incompatibility between artificial intelligence and ontological construction.
The first layer concerns epistemological contradiction. Artificial intelligence proceeds through inference, approximation, and statistical pattern recognition. Its knowledge claims are inherently probabilistic, drawn from correlations observed in training data. Ontology, however, requires precision and certainty. An ontological statement is not a guess but a declaration of categorical truth. How, the critique asks, can probabilistic guessing produce absolute definitions? How can uncertainty generate certainty? The epistemological foundations appear fundamentally misaligned.
The second layer addresses methodological corruption. Traditional ontology emerges from sustained philosophical contemplation. Domain experts engage in deliberate acts of design, determining not merely what exists but what should exist within a conceptual framework. The process is inherently subjective, intentional, and normative. Artificial intelligence, by contrast, extracts patterns from existing data. It discovers what does appear in its training corpus rather than designing what should appear in a conceptual architecture. What was once a design decision becomes a mining operation. The critique suggests this represents not merely a shift in method but a corruption of ontology’s fundamental purpose. What emerges is not ontology at all, but data classification masquerading under a more prestigious name.
The third layer exposes terminological deception. What practitioners actually perform when they claim to construct ontology through artificial intelligence is knowledge extraction, data mining, automated tagging, and pattern recognition. Yet these activities are consistently described using more elevated terminology: “ontology construction,” “ontology learning,” “knowledge graph building.” The choice of language serves two purposes. First, it confers intellectual authority; ontology sounds considerably more sophisticated than tagging. Second, it names the activity by its intended destination rather than its actual method. But calling data mining “ontology” is comparable to calling a pile of bricks “architecture.” The materials may eventually serve architectural purposes, but they do not yet constitute architecture itself.
The critique thus presents a seemingly devastating indictment: using artificial intelligence to build ontology represents a category error of significant proportions. The tool is fundamentally incompatible with the goal. This assessment is both sharp and valid—within its assumptions. Yet there exists an unexamined premise.
The critique assumes that ontology, understood as a system of absolute definitions, represents the correct goal, and that artificial intelligence, with its probabilistic methods, constitutes an inadequate tool for achieving that goal. But what if we invert this assumption? What if the pursuit of absolute definition is itself the wrong goal? What if the entity-and-fixed-relationship framework represents not the solution but the problem?

This questioning opens a fundamentally different perspective on the apparent incompatibility between artificial intelligence and ontology. The critique views the situation as follows: artificial intelligence, characterized by instability and approximation, cannot produce ontology, characterized by stability and precision. You cannot build concrete structures from sand. Monotology proposes a different framing. The goal of constructing a “concrete building”—that is, a fixed entity structure—is itself erroneous. Artificial intelligence operates probabilistically not because it suffers from a deficiency, but because reality itself exhibits probabilistic and fluid characteristics. The “sand castle” is not the problem; the goal of building a permanent structure is the problem.
Monotology proposes recognizing flow with flow. Rather than attempting to force probabilistic intelligence into the production of fixed definitions, we might shift our goal from entity definition to motion pattern recognition. The question becomes not how to make artificial intelligence produce better ontology, but why we continue attempting to freeze what flows.
This reframing requires examining the fundamental assumptions underlying traditional ontology. Ontology begins with a basic premise: the world consists of entities, between which exist relationships. Define these entities and relationships with sufficient clarity, and you possess knowledge. This framework has served human thought for millennia. Yet the advent of large language models reveals something unexpected. These models do not “know” entities in any traditional sense. They know only token flow—patterns of textual probability cascading through high-dimensional vector spaces. Yet they demonstrate remarkable understanding, generating coherent responses, maintaining context across extended exchanges, and producing insights that often surprise their creators.
What does this reveal? It suggests that “entity” may be a human abstraction rather than the fundamental unit of knowledge. The fundamental unit might instead be flow itself. Large language models succeed precisely because they operate on flow. Traditional ontology struggles precisely because it demands fixity. The mismatch represents not artificial intelligence’s failure but ontology’s anachronism.
Consider a shift in metaphor. The original critique characterizes artificial intelligence as a sand castle—unstable, temporary, inappropriate for serious construction—and ontology as a concrete building—stable, permanent, the proper goal of knowledge engineering. You cannot make concrete from sand, therefore artificial intelligence cannot produce ontology. Monotology offers a different metaphor: artificial intelligence as flowing water, ontology as ice sculpture.
Can you freeze water into ice sculptures? Certainly. But the moment you freeze the flow, it ceases to be flow. The sculpture is static, brittle, resistant to change. The water, frozen into form, has lost precisely what made it vital. The real question becomes: why are we attempting to freeze the flow at all? Can we not work with flow as flow? Monotology represents the effort to understand water as flow, without the compulsion to freeze it into fixed forms.
This perspective yields two possible conclusions from the observation that artificial intelligence struggles to produce traditional ontology. Conclusion A, aligned with the original critique, maintains that if we desire true ontology, human experts must design it. We preserve the ontological framework and criticize the use of artificial intelligence within that framework. Conclusion B, aligned with monotological thinking, suggests that the awkwardness of using artificial intelligence for ontology stems not from artificial intelligence’s inadequacy but from ontology’s anachronistic status as a goal.
Artificial intelligence operates through flow. Human cognition, increasingly understood through predictive processing and embodied dynamics, likewise operates through flow. Reality itself, as revealed by quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and complexity theory, exhibits fundamental characteristics of flow rather than fixity. The attempt to define static entities becomes increasingly incompatible with our understanding of how intelligence and reality actually function. The question is not why artificial intelligence cannot build ontology properly, but why we persist in attempting to build ontology at all.
Artificial intelligence struggles with ontology not because it is broken, but because ontology demands fixity in a reality that is fundamentally characterized by flow. The probability paradox dissolves when we recognize that the apparent deficiency—the inability to produce certainty from uncertainty—points not to a limitation of the tool but to an error in our choice of destination. The hidden premise of the critique holds that certainty, in the form of fixed entity definition, represents the correct goal. Monotology challenges that premise directly.
The reason artificial intelligence cannot produce ontology well is not a limitation of artificial intelligence. It arises because ontology’s requirement of fixity contradicts reality’s nature as flow. The relevant question is not how to make artificial intelligence produce better ontology. The question is why we continue attempting to freeze what flows. Monotology proposes an alternative: ontology appropriate to the Monokinetic Era, an approach that does not freeze flow into entities but recognizes flow as flow, motion as the fundamental character of knowledge, intelligence, and being itself.
