The Joke That Wasn’t
In a later interview, Licklider said that “Intergalactic” was just a joke. But was it? The word intergalactic was not about network scale. It was about something he sensed but could not say. In his time, the language did not exist to express human-computer unity, thought-execution simultaneity, the dissolution of the user-tool distinction. So he said intergalactic and called it a joke. The joke was a shield for a meaning he could sense but not speak. He did not describe the future. He reflected it by not saying it. This is the mirror in action.
